Mieczysław Dukiet

Mieczysław Dukiet was born in 1899. His father was a district judge in Lesko. After graduating from the junior high school in Sanok he was recruited into Austrian army and fought in Italy. In 1918 he joined the II artillery regiment in Przemyśl and took part in the Polish – Bolshevik war. After the war he did a degree in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University. He was a specialist in women’s diseases.                       

He settled in Krynica in 1928 and there he had treated patients and supported the development of Krynica for 55 years. He was popular with patients from Poland and abroad. He cured princess Juliane of infertility. Later she became the queen of the Netherlands.  

After participation in the September campaign he was engaged in the organisation of the Polish Committee of Care and resistance movement of the National Army (AK) (transfers to Hungary and Slovakia) because of which he had been kept for three months at the Gestapo office in Nowy Sącz. After the WWII mjr dr Dukiet was the head of the Military Sanatorium in Krynica. Each month he gave lectures on balneology that were very popular with patients. In the health resort he organised conventions of doctors from the whole Poland. He had been a president of the circles of the Polish Balneology Society and the Polish Medical Society for many years. He was an editor of the magazine ‘Spa News’. A water ‘Mieczysław’ was named after him. He had long fought for its good usage. He took care of the good condition of the spa appliances, environmental protection and development of sport. He was a president of the Hockey Society in Krynica, when it ranked high in the Polish Hockey. He died in 1983. A plaque was placed in DH ‘Perła’ to commemorate him.
